The mission of the Priest: CUM-PANIS

The priest is someone who travels along the path of faith together with the faithful. In this sense, he is like a companion on the road. The person that keeps you company is the person that shares bread with you. Company has two Latin roots: CUM+PANIS (With Bread). The priest is the first one to share bread with you, the bread of the Eucharist. This sharing is dynamic because it takes place on an on-going basis.

The fact that we can share bread means that the possibility for communication grows. There is room for listening, understanding, dialogue, planning, etc. Most important, it is Jesus who wants to share this bread of life with us. "I am at the door and knock, if someone lets me in I will share a meal with him" (Rev 3,20).

Sharing a meal with Jesus places a responsibility over us. We are called to duplicate this action with others so that the presence of Jesus may be visible in our sharing. Let us ask the Lord to help us become true companions to the people that walk with us in the path of life.
